Country star Ty Herndon has come out to reveal he’s gay, hoping to help others in their journey to coming out. The 51-year-old singer has kept it a secret for the duration of his career but did start coming out to loved ones around the age of 20.
Herndon said he knew he was gay around the age of 10, but he was “horrified” at that fact.
In a revealing interview with People, the “Living in a Moment" singer said it was at an Anthony Robbins seminar five years ago that he knew his experiences could help others in his same position.
"I'm an out, proud and happy gay man," he said. Looking back on his 10 year old self sitting in church, he was ashamed to admit it to himself.
"And I know there's a lot of those kids still out there. Telling my story is an opportunity to help just one of them," he said. "They can be loved by God, they can be married one day, they can have a family, they can give their parents grandkids," Herndon adds. "And they're not broken, they're not sinners and they're perfectly beautiful."
Fellow country artist and friend, Chely Wright, came out in 2010, who introduced him to his partner Matt.
Herndon's sit-down with Entertainment Tonight will air on Thursday night.
