HBO is sparing no expense on legal fees as it backs a documentary about Scientology and Hollywood.

"We have probably 160 lawyers" examining the production, HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter .

That's wise, given the film, which could be submitted to the Sundance Film Festival in January, is touted as featuring new revelations about the controversial religion and its famous followers. Scientology has long been known for its deep ties to Tinsletown's elite. Mega-stars Tom Cruise and John Travolta are widely regarded as loyal followers who dig into their deep pockets to promote what some regard as a religion.

This production, to be directed by Alex Gibney, will be based on Going Clear by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lawrence Wright. It will dig into the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and examine and the influence his organization has on believers, according to CNN .

Scientology is notorious for using its substantial resources to fight and dispute any negative allegations and press.
