Hulu is building its roster of original scripted programming, ordering Difficult People, a new series from the very funny mind of Amy Poehler.
The series will be produced by Poehler and comes from Universal Cable Productions. Billy Eichner and his Billy on the Street co-star Julie Klausner will star as best friends, struggling to be a success in comedy in New York City. Of course, they can’t figure out why people don’t like them.
Klausner penned the pilot and will be an executive producer with Louie’s Dave Becky and Poehler.
“When I first joined Hulu, I was excited to break new ground and continue to expand the offering of premium content that Hulu was built upon,” Beatrice Springborn, Hulu’s head of originals, said in a statement. “Difficult People is one of those smart, distinctive comedy series that perfectly fits into our diverse slate of high-quality Hulu Originals.”
Difficult People will begin filming next year.
Hulu has two other highly anticipated original shows coming up. Last month, the streaming site ordered CASUAL from filmmaker Jason Reitman and 11/22/63, a J.J. Abrams production based on the Stephen King novel.
Poehler will next be seen in the final season of Parks & Recreation, which will debut this midseason on NBC. She is a former Saturday Night Live star and also provides the voice for the lead character in Pixar’s Inside Out.
