If you are letting an American network remake the show that made you a star, you might as well make sure they get it right. Idris Elba will be doing just that for Fox’s Luther remake.

Fox put in a pilot commitment for a remake of the acclaimed BBC crime drama, which starred the Prometheus actor in the title role. The series only ran three seasons with 14 episodes.

Deadline reports that Elba will be an executive producer on the project, while series creator Neil Cross will write and executive produce. The U.S. Luther is based at 29th Century Fox TV and will be co-produced by Chernin Entertainment with BBC Worldwide Productions.

This isn’t the first time that Luther has received an adaptation in another country. According to The Hollywood Reporter a Russian version called Klim is already in the works. It will debut next year.

Cross also wrote a prequel novel called The Calling and Cross is looking to turn that into a feature film.

This midseason, Fox will air another series based on a European show centering on an unorthodox detective. Backstrom with Rainn Wilson will debut soon.

The network is also currently airing Gracepoint, which is based on ITV’s Broadchurch. The show has earned poor ratings, but will continue to air since it is only planned as a limited series.

Cross also created NBC’s John Malkovich-starring pirate show Crossbones. He also wrote Universal’s horror movie Mama.
