Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show tenure has already created countless viral hits, but he is now inspiring an entire new show. Spike TV has greenlit Lip Sync Battle, a series based on the hilarious skits he does often with celebrities.
Fallon and Hello Ladies star Stephen Merchant announced the show during Merchat’s appearance on the Tonight Show last night. It was co-created with Merchant and John Krasinski, who will also be co-producing. The studios behind the series are Fallon’s Eight Million Plus Productions and Matador.
“Lip Sync Battling is one of the coolest things happening in pop culture right now and already has a huge fan base thanks to the amazing talent involved,” Casey Patterson, Executive Vice President, Talent Development and Production, Viacom Entertainment Group, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be in business with producers as talented as Jimmy, John and Stephen as Spike broadens its programming in new and exciting ways.”
Fallon, Merchant and Krasinski have all agreed to participate in the series, which will be taped in New York City in January. Each episode will feature celebrities lip syncing to songs of their choice, just like in the Tonight show segments.
The show will premiere on April 2. A host and the celebrity guest roster will be announced later.
