NBC has decided that one of its next live events will not be a musical. Instead, the peacock network wants to stage a live reading of a dramatic play, namely Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men.

The news was first reported by Variety and hasn’t been confirmed by NBC yet. Apparently, the network is in the very early stages of talks with Sorkin, whose play debuted in 1989.

Sorkin shot to fame when the acclaimed play hit Broadway. The 1992 film, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

Since the film was released by Sony’s TriStar Pictures, Sony TV would be involved in the production. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who oversaw The Sound of Music Live!, will be involved with it as well. Variety reports that it was their idea to do the live version and NBC Entertainment head Bob Greenblatt spoke with Sorkin about it. The Social Network Oscar winner is expected to work on the story once again to fit live broadcast TV.

NBC’s next live show is Peter Pan Live! on Dec. 4, with Zadan and Meron also producing that. Back in May, NBC said that The Music Man will be the 2015 live musical, but it will be interesting to see if the Few Good Men deal gets in the way of that plan.

Not to be outdone, Fox is also planning a Grease Live broadcast sometime in 2015.
