Thanks to Jess, Coach is the health teacher at school. So, the guys are all checking out the health book she uses, giggling over the female reproductive system, talking big and acting like some guys that are familiar with that region of the female body. Jess is preparing for a conference out of town, so the guys are gearing up for some quality bro-time – minus Coach, because he’s going to the conference, too, since he’s a teacher, like Jess.
Remember Ryan, the dreamy guy with the accent that Jess hired to replace her as a teacher since she got moved to vice principal? The one who helped her teach the rest of the teachers what not to do when it comes to sexual harassment from another teacher? Well, that dreamboat is back, and of course, he’s going to the teacher conference, too. Even better, he’s in the room right next to Jess.
While cracking open a few beers (cough, glasses of Sangria, cough, cough) the guys head over to Jess’s room to enjoy the view from her window of the girls across the way doing yoga in their apartment; an activity the guys don’t get to enjoy on a regular basis when Jess is home. After accidentally throwing sangria all over Jess’s comforter, Schmidt breaks down and reveals to the guys that he doesn’t know how to do laundry.
Ryan tries to talk to Jess at the conference, but knowing she can’t be with him, Jess freaks out and rushes to Coach, asking him to be her buffer for the conference. Coach agrees to help Jess, but then Guru Brenda, the woman running the conference, calls Coach out for talking during her introduction, and then proceeds to tell him he’s not fit to be a teacher. Crushing him, Coach exits to the bar, leaving Jess buffer-less and without a partner for the group exercises. She’s now forced to interact with Ryan and be his partner for the exercises upon Guru Brenda’s request.
Schmidt explains to Winston and Nick how his Nana never let him touch the laundry as a child, because he always had butter on his hands from eating so much. When it came time to go to college and do his own laundry, the hot girls in the dorm laundry rooms made fun of his maternity band stretchy pants, so he became discouraged and just never learned how to do his laundry.
Feeling his pain, Winston reveals that he never learned how to use a ruler. Knowing it’s his brotherly duty to his buddies, Nick says he’s going to teach them how to do laundry and use a ruler, like a man should know how to do.
Back at the conference, Guru Brenda gives Jess and Ryan a stack of cards with questions on them to help them get to know one another and break the ice. After the cards, Brenda Guru sends them through a series of trust building exercises, which only makes it harder for Jess to resist Ryan. In the midst of her crisis, she calls Cece, of course. Jess tells Cece that she put a white envelope in her purse, and that Cece needs to get the envelope out and read the letter in it to Jess to help her resist Ryan.
Over at the bar, Winston is drowning his feelings in a few (dozen) drinks and his newfound friend, Ned. He says health doesn’t matter and he shouldn’t be a teacher, but a woman across the bar says health is the most important subject, because it keeps people from getting pregnant. Coach still isn’t convinced he’s all that important.
Now that it’s time for free-time at the conference, Jess and Ryan head over to the bar. While Ryan is in the middle of calling Jess out on avoiding him, Coach climbs to the top of the pool cabana outside the hotel, saying he’s going to do a backflip off of it into the pool to prove that he’s awesome. While Jess tries to coax him down, Ryan climbs up to help.
After Nick successfully teaches Winston how to use a ruler and Schmidt how to do the laundry, he confesses that he doesn’t know how to love, he never learned. Feeling deeply saddened by this, Winston and Schmidt take him under their wings, or under their tent rather, and try to show him what love feels like, singing classic love songs from the past.
While Jess argues with Coach and Ryan on top of the pool cabana, Coach drunkenly falls backwards into the pool, worried he’ll drown, Ryan jumps in after him. Jess stands there wishing Ryan wasn’t so heroic and perfect. After rescuing Coach from the water, the three head back to Jess’s room to dry off and hang out. While Jess and Ryan bond over musical alcohol bottles, Jess lets it slip that she has a crush on Ryan. At that moment, Coach gets sick and Jess rushes Ryan out of the room.
When morning rolls around, Coach and Jess start to pack up the car to head back home. Coach thanks his new friend Ned for the realization that he is a good teacher and a value to the students, while Jess talks to Ryan about what she blurted out the night before. The conversation ends with a steamy kiss, leaving Jess wondering what will be next for her and Ryan.
