The Niagara University women’s basketball team was rescued after being trapped on a bus for more than 24 hours in Tuesday’s snowstorm.

NBC News reported that the Niagara University players, coaches and some family members all became stranded on the bus when heavy snow pounded the area and closed the New York State Thruway.

The Purple Eagles were heading home after a game against the Pittsburgh Panthers when the bus was forced to stop about 50 miles from the team’s Buffalo campus.

"It started to get bad fast at about 2 a.m. and we came to a dead stop and haven't moved since," Niagara coach Kendra Faustin told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday evening. "It was a rough weekend for us on the court and it just won't end."

As previously reported, lake-effect record snowfall battered New York State Tuesday and authorities said more is on the way.

Luckily everyone on board the bus was OK during the ordeal since the team had bottles of water and officials got snacks to them when a supply they had was running low.

Some of the players tweeted images while they were stranded and how elated they were when they were finally rescued.
