Richard Simmons has responded to claims that he’s depressed and hiding away from the public. The fitness guru confirmed that he is dealing with a serious injury, but tried to put his usual positive spin on the situation.
As we previously reported, a TMZ report claimed that Simmons hasn’t been seen publicly since January because he is shutting everyone out, including his friends. He was recently told that he needs to have a left knee replacement, but he has put the procedure off for a year already.
The 66-year-old is concerned that another procedure would keep him from exercising. He already had a right knee replacement four years ago.
Simmons responded to the report with a Facebook post, thanking fans for their support. He did say that he’s had a “tough time dealing with this injury” since it keeps him from teaching classes at his famous Beverly Hills studio.
“I am so touched by the outpouring of love and concern I have received today,” the full post reads. “I have had a tough time dealing with this injury, as it is keeping me from doing what I truly love to do and that is to teach classes around the world. Make sure you keep Sweatin’!”
Meanwhile, TMZ is still speculating reasons for Simmons’ depression. The site suggests that the death of his beloved dalmatian Hattie coincided with his last public appearance. Hattie was 17 years old and simmons treated the dog like a child.
