Fans of Sherlock should be aware that the new season could dish up a tragedy.

Series co-creator Mark Gatiss told Radio Times on Thursday that viewers can “expect tragedy as well as adventure” in the show’s new season. Gatiss didn’t say outright what the tragedy would be, but it was theorized by the publication to happen to John Watson’s wife on the show. She dies at a certain point in the original Sherlock Holmes tales by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Radio Times also reported that Gatiss mentioned that, while he and Stephen Moffat, the show’s other co-creator, have used and followed certain elements of Doyle’s original tales in the show, they have also added in new elements. Regarding Watson’s wife’s death, he said that despite that event happening in the original story, it may not happen in Sherlock.

Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new season will consist of three episodes and will begin production next year.
