Starz just got a lot more groovy. For the television station has acquired the in-the-works Evil Dead TV series and will air its ten-episode first season in 2015 under the new title Ash vs. Evil Dead. If that wasn't good enough, Bruce Campbell returns as the now titular character Ash and trilogy helmer Sam Raimi is co-writing and directing the pilot.

Collider reported on the new series. While word first came out about the series back in July, this is the first time anything official has been released about the program. Ash vs. Evil Dead centers on the main character's "last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity, and the terrors of the Evil Dead.” Forced out of retirement, essentially, Ash is called back in action when a Deadite plague threats to destroy all of mankind.

Evil Dead has always been a blast," Raimi said. "Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it.”

Each episode will be half-an-hour long. That first half-hour, however, will have some familiar faces behind the scenes, as Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan, who wrote Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness and Drag Me to Hell together, will pen the pilot with Tom Spezialy (Chuck). Additionally, Sam Raimi executive produces Ash vs. Evil Dead alongside Campbell and Rob Tapert, all of which produced the Evil Dead remake last year.

With Sam Raimi and Tapert previously producing the Starz series Spartacus, it makes sense bringing this new program to their platform. While there has been talk for years of bringing Ash back in another Evil Dead movie, either titled Evil Dead 4 or Army of Darkness 2, turns out the creative brain trust has turned their focus, like so many filmmakers today, to the creative and growing world of television instead.

With a smaller budget, though, it's assumed that Ash vs. Evil Dead will continue the film series tradition of using their lower production values to their advantages. With no false steps in the series yet, all one can hope is that Ash contains to reign supreme on the small screen.
