In an attempt to revive his Broadway musical The Last Ship, Sting has announced he’s joining the cast through Jan. 10. The rocker will replace Jimmy Nail as the lead.

Sting wrote the music and lyrics for Ship, which has seen disappointing ticket sales. Since its start on Sept. 29, they’ve been losing $75,000 a week from the show, which cost $15 million to create. The average earnings the show has brought in per week has been around $500,000 to $600,000.

“I’ve been working on this show for five years and been at every rehearsal, every performance, so it’s not like I’ve flown in from Planet Rock Star to save the day,” Sting told the New York Times on Sunday.

He last hit the Broadway stage in 1989’s Threepenny Opera. He will step in for Nail, who said he will “happily” step aside for Sting, starting Dec. 9.

People reports The Last Ship is based on Sting’s upbringing in England, although he’s not an investor himself.

He’s so dedicated to save the show that he joked he would show his backside "in Macy's if it will help our show."
