This episode of The Millers started with Carol standing over a sleeping Nathan and singing him a bedtime story she has sung to him since childhood.
Nathan wakes up very unhappy at this, especially considering he was dreaming of an attractive woman hitting on him. He reminds his mom they are neighbors and she can’t keep checking on him all the time since he’s a full grown adult. Nathan convinces her to leave and she tells him to remember that the breakfast that is ready for him downstairs was made before their discussion. But before she can go, Nathan asks her to finish the song.
At the house, Debbie comes downstairs completely sick. Adam says he’ll go to the café alone to work as Nathan and Ray come in. They tell them that Nathan has an interview with a basketball player named Metta World Peace and he will be talking to him about his children’s book. Adam and Mikayla head off and then Debbie takes off her robe to reveal she is completely dressed and not sick. She has been substitute teaching at school since the café isn’t bringing money in. Ray suggests Nathan do the interview in Debbie’s classroom and it’s fine with her since Nathan promises she won’t be on television for Adam to see, who is actually only watching the Spanish channel anyway.
Ray and Nathan are reading Metta World Peace’s book when Carol comes over, but she can’t get in since Nathan got a lock for the door. When they try to hide, she breaks the door open and tells Nathan she heard sirens and thought he choked on an uncut grape. Kip comes in too and Nathan is upset because whenever his mom comes, “mini mom” follows. They both tell him he’s being rude in similar poses and Nathan asks them both to leave, drawing an imaginary line across the hallway and telling them to think of it as the U.S.-Mexican border.
The next day, Nathan is running late for the interview while Ray is being mistaken for Metta World Peace at the classroom. Nathan tries to get money in for his gas tank, but the checker is focused on a little girl who won’t choose a lollipop. He gets so mad, he yells at her and makes her take the entire thing of candy. It turns out to be the daughter of Metta World Peace.
Nathan is in the classroom worried that Metta World Peace will recognize him as Debbie and Ray tell him not to worry. Ray tries to find a disguise for Nathan and takes a little girl’s glasses off her face so he can put them on Nathan. Nathan hopes Metta World Peace won’t notice and Debbie offers to distract his daughter, Diamond.
Nathan tries to do the interview by hiding behind one of the books, but Diamond recognizes him. Metta confronts him but Nathan tries to get back to the interview. When the kids begin chanting for them to fight, Metta suggests he yell at Nathan while Nathan picks up a little girl to use as a shield as he runs out of the room.
Nathan and Ray are at the house, where Nathan is embarrassed because he thought the little girl was a chair. Carol comes in worried and reveals she knew something was wrong based on how he parked his car and ran across the grass. Ray turns their attention to the news, which is airing a story on what happened. Even though Ray destroyed the tape, the students caught video on cell phones. Meanwhile, Tom is watching the news while also on the phone as he waits to speak to a representative. Upstairs, Adam is in bed watching the Spanish station, which shows Debbie on the segment.
Carol tries to coax Nathan into letting her help, but he refuses. He gets her out of the house and Ray suggests that it’s possible a celebrity rehab story is taking over so he turns on Entertainment Tonight. That’s not the case, unfortunately for Nathan.
The next day, Ray and Nathan are listening to the radio where Nathan is calling in with his voice disguised in an attempt to show support for himself. Ray has different phones on the line calling so Nathan can talk, including as a woman from Ireland.
Debbie comes downstairs still feigning sickness. Adam suggests they use Mikayla’s old snot sucker to get rid of the mucus, but she tries to prevent him from doing so. He comes over and as he is about to pretend to suck out the mucus, he admits he knows she is substitute teaching. She admits that she may have given up on the café and he also confesses that he has too. Tom comes in, having finally gotten ahold of the representative. He has been on for almost a week just to tell them he doesn’t want to be part of a customer survey.
Nathan comes home to find Metta in his apartment. Soon, both their mothers walk out with coffee, with some whiskey added, and Carol tells Nathan she had to help because the situation was too big and she found Metta’s mother at the hotel. Both of them make their sons sit on the couch. Metta scolds her son for getting mad, telling him “two wrongs don’t make a right” and Carol scolds Nathan for yelling at Diamond. They tell the boys to work things out before going back into the kitchen for more whiskey.
The boys commiserate about their mothers, with Metta confessing his mom lives in a house next door. Nathan apologizes for yelling at Diamond, explaining he was stressed out and worried about his career. Metta forgives him, saying Diamond should have made a decision and that indecision runs in their family. He’s worried no one will buy his books because of his temper. Nathan gets an idea for them to figure out a way out of the situation together.
Nathan and Metta go on the news to tell the world the situation was a staged prank to bring awareness to bullying. Nathan also unceremoniously promotes Metta’s book by holding it up for viewers to see. At home, Kip chants that “we did it” but Nathan reminds him he wasn’t involved. Carol promises not to get involved again, but Nathan knows she can’t keep the promise but he doesn’t want her to keep it. Nathan gets up to go to bed as Carol begins singing their song to him. He smiles as he heads up to bed. When she sings “the world shrinks down to just us two,” Kip chimes in with “three.”
