If you were on the Internet for even five minutes on Friday, you heard about Too Many Cooks. It was impossible to avoid.
Even though the bizarre Adult Swim short aired last week, it wasn’t until Friday that it gained attention on YouTube. A low quality version eventually scored over 1 million views before Adult Swim finally posted a high quality version on YouTube.
Created by Squidbillies writer Chris “Casper” Kelly, the 11-minute video starts out innocently enough, looking like a parody of an ‘80s and ‘90s TV sitcom about a large family. However, the theme song just keeps building and morphs into more TV genres. And then it starts to play with your mind and it gets really disturbing from there.
Kelly was asked to explain what the f**k he was thinking when he came up with this. He admitted to Entertainment Weekly that it was “probably one of those shower ideas that you don’t know what to do with.” He knew that Adult Swim was making these 11-minute shorts and pitched the idea to his boss, who approved the idea.
“It’s basically a show open, a fake sitcom where characters look and smile and their name comes up, and then it just doesn’t stop,” he said was his original pitch. His boss suggested that it would only take four minutes for an audience to get bored, so he was told, “...You’re going to need to start zigging and zagging after that,” and that’s exactly what he did.
The names featured in the short are also mostly real. He decided that joke names would detract from the visuals. (Of course, the “Lars Von Trier as Pie” joke is hard to ignore.)
“I definitely hope it is more than a satire of intros, and taking it to a dark place, and that contrast of the chipperness of a sitcom and the darkness when a structure breaks down,” Kelly explained. “I’m going to sound pretentious in anything I say, but also I didn’t think people were going to want to watch it more than once.”
In his chat with Rolling Stone, Kelly said that this isn’t actually his kind of comedy. His work on Squidbillies and Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell is very different from Too Many Cooks.
Kelly, who has been shocked by the attention the short received, said that it was only shot in three days, although that’s a day more than Adult Swim’s typical Infomercials short. As for the cast, they were all extras from the Atlanta area, who “were very excited to have their names in the credits.”
