AMC is looking to bring another comic book to life, but this time, it doesn’t have to do with zombies. The cable network has put in a pilot order for Preacher, a project based on a comic published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.
The project has been in the works since February, when Seth Rogen and his frequent creative partner Evan Goldberg were hired by Sony Pictures TV to write and executive produce. Sam Catlin of Breaking Bad will co-executive produce and is the showrunner.
AMC officially put in the pilot order on Wednesday, noting that Rogan and Goldberg will direct the pilot. The series is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillons’ book series, which centers on Jesse Custer, a small town Texas preacher who merges with a creature from heaven and can make people do whatever he wants. He goes on a journey with his girlfriend and an Irish vampire to find God.
“Preacher has been our favorite comic since it first came out,” Rogen and Goldberg said in a statement. “Garth Ennis is one of our idols and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many dick jokes and ruin it.”
AMC is also home to The Walking Dead and is developing a spin-off.
Preacher will be filmed in summer 2015 and could air in 2016 if it gets picked up.
