Bradley Cooper gave an interview to Vanity Fair and spoke out about his father’s death and marking 10 years of being sober.
According to Us Weekly, the 39-year-old actor talked about how the struggles he went through allowed him to get ready for his role in the movie American Sniper. The film chronicles the life of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, whose autobiography inspired movie.
Vanity Fair reported that Cooper spoke to editor Buzz Bissinger and reflected that, “Losing someone close to me. Going through love and loss…knowing what’s important. Realizing that the bottom line is that all I got is me, so it’s about time to stop trying to be something that I think you would want me to be.”
Cooper also alluded to his past troubles with addiction and it was revealed that it has been ten years since he began sobriety.
In order to get prepared for the role, he allowed his body to do it naturally without any using stimulants. “I did it naturally because I’ve been sober for 10 years and didn’t want to do anything. I had a realistic conversation. Can I do this in three months naturally? Can I gain 30 pounds of f***ing muscle?” Luckily, his body was able to react quickly to his preparation.
You can read the full interview with Cooper, who also appears on the cover, in the January Vanity Fair issue when it comes out on Dec. 9.
