Cliff Curtis, an actor who appeared in the short-lived Fox drama Gang Related, will have the male lead in AMC’s The Walking Dead spin-off.
Curtis will play Sean Cabrera, essentially the series’ Rick Grimes (the lead character in Walking Dead played by Andrew Lincoln). The Hollywood Reporter reports that the character is a teacher who has a son with his ex-wife. He is a good man, much like Rick, who tries to do everything right in his life.
The female lead role, that of guidance counselor Nancy Tompkins, is still being cast. However, Nancy’s children are already set. Earlier this week, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’s Frank Dillane and Into The Storm’s Alycia Debnam Carey were cast as siblings.
Sources told THR that Fringe’s Anna Torv was tested for the Nancy role, but she is no longer being considered.
The Walking Dead companion series was created by Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson. It’s not technically a spin-off, since the series will follow a completely different group of zombie apocalypse survivors. Adam Davidson is set to direct.
Curtis has appeared in Live Free or Die Hard, Three Kings and Training Day on the big screen. His TV resume includes Gang Related, Body of Proof and Trauma.
While AMC has only put in a pilot order for the series, it is widely expected to get a series order, considering that Walking Dead remains the most-watched show on cable.
