While yesterday’s Golden Globes nominations for movies were rather predictable, the television side of things was much more shocking. Several mainstays were left out, with nominations for new shows making it clear that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is watching them.

The most surprising category had to the Best Comedy Series, which was devoid of last year’s winner, then-freshman Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The Fox cop comedy was completely shut out, despite also winning Best Actor - Comedy for Andy Samberg.

In addition, no major broadcast comedy was nominated in the category. The CW’s Jane The Virgin knocked out Brooklyn and both Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory were forgotten about. In fact, Big Bang’s Jim Parsons wasn’t nominated for Best Actor - Comedy either.

The Modern Family snub is a bit of a relief though. ABC’s hit sitcom’s creative glory days are far behind it and its continued domination of the Emmys is maddening. At least one awards committee has realized that.

Jane is surprisingly The CW’s first break into awards season. Star Gina Rodriguez also snapped up a nod for Best Actress - Comedy, although she has some incredible competition there. Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) are the other nominees there.

Co-host and last year’s Best Actress - Comedy winner Amy Poehler was left out. Parks and Recreation just doesn’t get the respect it deserves, even after Poehler finally won in 2014.

Another breakthrough came for Amazon, whose Transparent with Jeffrey Tambor is up for Best Comedy Series. Tambor was also nominated for Best Actor - Comedy.

On the drama side, we again learned that the HFPA doesn’t watch AMC’s The Walking Dead for whatever reason. They also must not be watching Mad Men any longer, since the show was nowhere to be found on the nominees list. The show was pushed out for Showtime’s The Affair in Best Drama Series.

And while Game of Thrones was nominated for Best Drama Series, it apparently features no actors. None of the show’s stars were nominated for their performances.

In addition, Scandal’s Kerry Washington was not nominated for Best Actress - Drama, even though she has been in the past. Instead, the HFPA went with How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis.

In the miniseries/movie categories, HBO’s The Normal Heart rightfully earned several, but the HFPA didn’t invite Julia Roberts to the party as a nominee. The film and its actors will have to compete with HBO’s True Detective, which is no small feat.

The Globes are live on NBC on Jan. 11. You can check out the full list of TV nominees here. You can check out our reaction to the movie nominees here.
