In the mind of 99 percent of the general public, the possibility of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan returning next season is a definite fat chance. Ryan though, isn't giving up on the thought.

According to the NY Post, Ryan recently had this to say: “I’m not dead yet,” Ryan said with a smile. “I’m always going to be me and that’s just my personality. That’s just who I am every day. Regardless of the good times, the bad times, or whatever, I think I’m consistent that way.”

Most believe it's a forgone conclusion that owner Woody Johnson will fire Ryan at the season's end. This season marks the fourth straight season the Jets will miss the playoffs, after Ryan led them to two AFC Championship game appearances in his first two seasons.

When asked about one of his high-water mark games, a 28-21 playoff win over the Patriots in 2011, Ryan said “I never thought that was going to be the changing of the guard. The year after that, we had 19 free agents when the new collective bargaining thing was signed, so it was totally different. Had the team stayed the same or whatever, who knows? The way it is, everything changed then".

“From that point on, a lot of things changed. We lost a lot of good players and we kind of had to rebuild the team, stack the deck a little different.”

Jets linebacker Calvin Pace sees Ryan as doing the right thing, staying true to his personality, as he says "best way to go out -- if that's the case," according to CBS Sports.
