Batman has his own prequel/origin series, so it only seems fair that Superman get his own. Man of Steel writer David Goyer is developing one for SyFy with Once Upon A Time’s Ian Goldberg.

SyFy said that the series will focus on the House of El and Superman’s grandfather, who tries to make Krypton an equal-opportunity planet. It sets up the environment that Kal-El is born into, before the planet is ultimately destroyed. (So, yes, we know how the series will end already.)

Goyer, whose other TV projects include Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons and NBC’s Constantine will executive produce with Ian Goldberg. Goldberg, who also worked on ABC’s short-lived FlashForward will write the pilot.

The project is produced by Warner Horizon Television.

DC Comics properties are all over television, with the Batman series Gotham on Fox and Constantine on NBC. The CW has Arrow and The Flash. CBS is developing a Supergirl series, while TNT could bring the Teen Titans to life.

Superman’s origin was previously the topic of the CW’s long-running Smallville, but that did start after Krypton was destroyed.

On the feature side, Goyer is responsible for writing Man of Steel and he worked on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies. He also co-write Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
