Paul MacLean is the first coach in the NHL to be fired this season, as the Ottawa Senators announced his dismissal Monday.
The Senators have an 11-11-5 record this season, which places them in 10th in the Eastern Conference.
In what would be MacLean’s final game as head coach, the Senators edged the Vancouver Canucks in overtime.
Dave Cameron, a current assistant coach on the team, is expected to be a leading candidate for the interim head coaching job, reports The Washington Post.
In part of four seasons at the helm, MacLean amassed a 114-90-35 regular-season record and an 8-9 mark in the playoffs, according to NHL.com.
In the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, Ottawa posted a 25-17-6. For his leadership, MacLean earned the Jack Adams Award, which is given to the coach of the year. The team was decimated by injuries, as Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson and Craig Anderson were sidelined for significant portions of the season.
The Senators made the playoffs that year as well as in 2012 but failed to do so last season.
