With Kai back, not only is the witch coven consisting of Jo, Liv, and Luke worried, but also everyone else in the Scooby gang.

Kai easily takes Jo hostage and demands that Liv figure out how to channel Jo's powers back into the knife, so that Jo can obtain her magic back.

However, Liv feels conflicted. If she helps Kai, she will have to eventually merge powers with her brother, Luke. That all is dependent on Jo's powers merging with Kai's.

On the other hand, despite Jo insisting that Liv not put herself and Luke at risk, Liv points out to Jo that maybe Jo could outpower Kai.

Elsewhere, Caroline receives a special visit from her mom at her college dorm room. The sheriff wants to share the tradition of decorating with her daughter, even though the town is a vampire-free zone. Caroline's mom brings the decorations to the bubbly vampire, along with Santa's little helper in the name of Stefan Salvatore.

By decorating Caroline's room, Stefan hopes to be on Caroline's good side again, but Caroline is quick to challenge Stefan for hurting her.

Nonetheless, when the sheriff faints, Stefan catches her and accompanies Caroline and her mom to the hospital.

There, Elena meets both Caroline and Stefan as they wait anxiously. With wait comes bad news when Elena discovers something heartbreaking that Stefan ultimately has to share with Caroline.

Over in May of 1994, Bonnie feels alone without anyone on Christmas as she lights up a lone Christmas tree in a parking lot, all the while she remembers a past Christmas with Elena and Caroline.

This memory only saddens Bonnie, as Jeremy in present day thinks of Bonnie as he stands in front of the town Christmas tree.

Meanwhile, Mystic Falls is under construction after Damon finds Kai at the cemetery. Kai pauses on the fight with Damon to recuperate behind a tombstone. Little does Damon know that Kai has absorbed the powers placed by the travelers on the town.

When Damon and Elena try to reunite back at the Salvatore mansion, Elena meets Damon at the door only for Damon to see her because Kai and Elena is now cloaked where not even Damon can see her. So much for kissing Damon under the mistletoe this year, Elena!
