Since Bob Dylan has announced his 36th studio album, it’s the perfect time to look at the iconic singer/songwriter’s past.
While we could just do another boring Top 10, writing about how great “Like A Rolling Stone,” “Tangled Up In Blue,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’” and “Blowin’ In The Wind” are, we’re going to look at some lesser known tracks from Robert Allen Zimmerman’s past. Through over five decades, Dylan has released countless songs and one could legitimately do a list on the best obscure songs from each decade.
Dylan has a discography that’s similar to Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen. They have a massive collection of songs that have made it to studio albums, but also didn’t make the cut. Dylan has actually released a whopping 11 volumes of The Bootleg Series, all featuring tracks that didn’t even make it out of the vault initially. Other loose songs have made it onto Greatest Hits albums or other rarities sets. There are even B-sides that have never been officially released on CD.
However, for my sanity, this list will be more of an overview, with a focus on album tracks. Dylan was never really a “singles act,” so his best material can often be found in songs that weren’t written for the radio. So, let’s get started.
