Considering how the media has been dominated by stories of hackers, it only makes sense that Hollywood would try to cash in. USA Network is going ahead with its own series about a hacker, Mr. Robot, which will star Christian Slater.
USA announced on Friday that it has picked up the series after obviously being impressed with the pilot. That episode was directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the director of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The full first season will feature 10 episodes.
The series was created by Sam Email, who is an executive producer on the series with Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Chad Hamilton. Along with Slater, the series features Rami Malek, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin and Martin Wallstrom.
Malek stars as Elliot, a young programmer who has an anti-social disorder. He decides that hacking is the only way he can connect with people and uses his knowledge to fight for the people he loves. However, he is caught between illegal groups that want him to work for them and the legitimate cybersecurity firm he works for.
“Mr. Robot could not be more timely and relevant,” Chris McCumber, President of USA, said in a statement. “The creative team behind this series has done a brilliant job, taking viewers on a wild ride that leaves them wanting more. Rami gives a masterful performance as a hacker and unlikely hero, alongside Christian, who is perfectly cast as Mr. Robot.”
USA is currently developing four other pilots for next season, including Colony with Josh Holloway and Evil Men with Dallas Roberts and Clifton Collins Jr. The network is also home to Graceland, Suits, Satisfaction and Royal Pains.
