The Chicago Bears hired former Denver Broncos head coach John Fox as their new head coach on Friday.
The deal is for four year, and financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Bears deal will help the Broncos financially. Fox had two years and about $11 million left on his contract with the Broncos and the Bears deal cancels all of that out, the Denver Post reports. On Monday Fox and the Broncos agreed to part ways.
The Bears had interviewed four other people for the job. Former Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone, Detroit Lions’ Teryl Austin, the Broncos Adam Gase, and Dan Quinn from the Seattle Seahawks were the other candidates that were interviewed, according to NFL.com. This week Fox became the favorite for the job.
Fox replaces Marc Trestman, who was fired last month after going 13-19 during the last two seasons. He is the third head coach for the Bears since 2012. In 2011 Fox become the coach of the Broncos after coaching the Carolina Panthers for nine seasons. He had a 46-18 record and led the Broncos to the playoffs in his four years with them, according to ESPN. Fox led the Broncos and the Panthers to the Super Bowl, becoming just the sixth coach to led two teams to the Super Bowl. Don Shula, Dan Reeves, Bill Parcells, Mike Holmgren, and Dick Vermeil are the others to coach two teams to the Super Bowl.
The Bears finished this season with a 8-8 record. They have failed to make the playoffs the last four years.
