CBS and Warner Bros. TV have found their Supergirl. Former Glee star Melissa Benoist will star as Superman’s cousin.

Benoist’s casting was reported by Deadline and other sites today. She played Marley Rose on Glee and was seen just seen on the big screen in the Best Picture nominee Whiplash. This role will raise her profile significantly, especially if CBS picks up the series.

Word that DC Comic and Warner Bros. TV were developing the pilot broke in September and CBS landed the project a short time later. It will be written by The Flash’s Greg Berlanti with Ali Adler. Claire Holt was among those tested for the Supergirl role.

Supergirl will focus on Kara Zor-El, who was born on Krypton and, like Superman, was sent to Earth. However, she has tried to keep her super powers a secret until she turns 24. Now, she’s ready to be a superhero.

Benoist will next star in The Longest Ride with Scott Eastwood.
