After a lengthy battle with cancer, sportscaster Stuart Scott died on Sunday morning. He was 49.

ESPN, where Scott worked since 1993, confirmed the news of his passing.

“ESPN and everyone in the sports world have lost a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure in Stuart Scott,” said ESPN president John Skipper. “Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments? Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set? His energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced.”

FOXNews.com noted that the longtime broadcaster was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and since then had undergone several surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Many of his colleagues and athletes took to Twitter with reactions after hearing of his death.

Scott is survived by his girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski and his two daughters Taelor, 19 and Sydni, 15. His youngest daughter joined her father on stage during his emotional speech at the ESPY’s last July.
