CBS viewers will see a familiar face when they tune in to see the new Criminal Minds spinoff. Former CSI: New York star Gary Sinise will star in the series, which will start as a planted pilot in the current Criminal Minds season.
Sinise will play FBI veteran Jack Garrett, reports TVLine. His character will lead the BAU team that focuses on helping Americans abroad.
News of plans for a second attempt at a Criminal Minds spinoff surfaced in December . The pilot will be filmed next month and will air towards the end of the current 10th season of Criminal Minds.
CBS last tried a spinoff of Criminal Minds in 2010 with Suspect Behavior. Despite starring Forest Whitaker, the series only lasted one season. The network is hoping that the new show will not meet the same fate, especially since Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer is writing the pilot.
CBS chief Nina Tassler said last week that having Messer onboard should help the spinoff significantly, notes Deadline. “Having her, one of the best showrunners in the business, behind it, that’s the key difference between this spinoff and the first one,” she said.
As for Sinise, he has been working on his Gary Sinise Foundation since CSI: NY ended in May 2013. The show ran for nine seasons. The actor has an Oscar nomination on his resume for Forrest Gump.
