Geraldine McEwan, best known for playing Miss Marple, passed away Friday.

According to People, the British actress died after suffering a severe stroke in October and has been hospitalized since.

In a statement, the children wrote, “Her family would like to thank the staff at Charing Cross Hospital who cared for her incredibly well.”

While performing in various plays, TV shows and in films, her biggest role was playing Agatha Christie’s lone woman detective, Miss Marple, which aired on ITV from 2004 through 2009.

Winning the Bafta award in 1991, McEwan also worked alongside Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and performed with Laurence Olivier in several plays.

Survived by two children, Claudia and Greg, the late actress’s husband, Hugh Cruttwell, passed away in 2002.

Actors and actresses took to Twitter to pay their respect to McEwan, with even the official page for The Tony Awards tweeting, “#RIP Geraldine McEwan, the British stage & TV actress and @TheTonyAwards nominee.”
