Talk about great timing. Just hours after The CW announced that it was picking up Jane The Virgin for a second season, star Gina Rodriguez won the network’s first Golden Globe for her performance in the series.

Rodriguez was clearly emotional when she came up to accept the surprise award. She won in a strong category that included Lena Dunham of Girls, Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco, Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Taylor Schilling of ORange is the New Black.

“Thank you to my mom and my dad who told me to dream big and never stop dreaming,” Rodriguez said on stage. “This award is so much more than myself - it represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”

According to Fox News, this was just the second time a Latina actress has won the Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy series Golden Globe. America Ferrera won in 2007 for Ugly Betty.

Jane the Virgin was also nominated for Best Musical/Comedy series, but lost to Amazon’s Transparent.

The CW announced at the Television Critics Association Press Tour earlier Sunday that it renewed Jane, along with Arrow, The flash, Reign, The 100, Supernatural, The Originals and The Vampire Diaries.

The network is airing the first two episodes of Jane tonight.
