The Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out the Golden Globes on Sunday night, effectively kicking the awards season into high gear. They set some films off to strong starts, while others are fumbling at the start. On the TV side, there were plenty of surprises as new shows shoved old ones to the side.
On the movie side, the big winners were Boyhood, Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Boyhood won Best Picture - Drama and Richard Linklater also won Best Director. Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress.
The Grand Budapest Hotel only won one award, but it was a big one. The Wes Anderson film took home Best Picture - Comedy/Musical.
Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman won Best Screenplay and Best Actor - Comedy/Musical for Michael Keaton’s performance.
In TV, Showtime’s freshman drama The Affair had a surprisingly strong showing, winning Best TV Drama series. Amazon Instant Video gained an air of respectability with Transparent’s two wins, including Best TV Comedy/Musical.
