The fourth season of Girls doesn’t start until this weekend, but HBO went ahead and renewed the series for a fifth season.
HBO broke the news during a premiere party for the new season in New York last night, notes Entertainment Weekly. Lena Dunham, who created the show and stars in it, and executive producer Jenni Konner will start working on the new season today.
“No one has seen them, but they exist,” Dunham said about the new scripts for season five.
The series centers on the struggles of 20-somethings in New York. Dunham stars as Hannah Horvath, while her friends are played by Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet. Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Adam Driver co-stars as Adam, Hannah’s boyfriend.
Girls’ new season kicks off on Sunday at 9 p.m. as part of HBO’s comedy block. It’s followed by Mark Duplass’ new show Togetherness and the second season of Looking.
Dunham is up for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a musical/comedy series and the show itself is up for Best TV Series - Musical/Comedy on Sunday.
