Oregon’s Marcus Mariota and Florida State’s Jameis Winston will go head-to-head again again, but not on the field. Winston’s father said today that his son does plan on entering the NFL Draft and leaving college.
Antonor Winston had said previously that Winston would not make a decision until after the College Playoff National Championship on Tuesday. However, Antonor Winston told ESPN that Winston made a firm decision on Tuesday night.
Winston said after FSU’s crushing defeat at the hands of Oregon at the Rose Bowl last week that he was looking forward to playing baseball for FSU again. He also said that he was looking forward to another college football season, notes USA Today. But obviously, he had a change of heart this week.
Winston had never lost a game until the Rose Bowl, winning his first 26 games as FSU’s starter. He helped FSU win their a national championship last year. During his career, he threw a touchdown pass in every game and proved that he can win games late, with four game-winning drives in the 2014 season.
However, while Winston put up great numbers, his off-the-field behavior has been less than exemplary, including a rape allegation that he was not charged for. He was also once suspended for a game due to an obscene phrase he yelled on campus.
Winston is expected to make a formal announcement later today.
The NFL Draft starts on April 20 in Chicago.
