Jane The Virgin returns with a flashback to Jane as a young girl looking over her perfect school scores when her mom notices a flier to have parents cook a meal from their heritage. Young Jane is reluctant because her mom is a bad cook and she was going to ask Alba. Alba also taught her how to pray with a rosary, which is what Jane wants to do when she ends up in the hospital after the fall at the hotel.

The doctor tells Xiomara and Jane that they won’t know the extent of Alba’s injuries until she wakes up. Jane wants to pay for a speedy recovery, but she can’t find her grandmother’s rosary. Her mom doesn’t want Jane to go back to the hotel to find them because of the storm, but Jane assures her she’ll be right back.

Meanwhile, Michael and Nadine go down into the tunnel that they discovered after their heated make out session to find a locked door that can only be opened via retinal scanner.

As this is going on, Rafael speaks to his father, who is planning on going away on some business despite the storm. Lachlan is not around to oversee the hotel, so he puts his son in charge of layoffs.

Jane is at the hotel searching for the rosary and a co-worker brings them to her. She is hoping to get back to the hospital, but by now, the storm has turned into a hurricane.

Rafael goes back to his office, where he discovers Petra waiting with the divorce papers she signed. She wants her money from the prenup, but he refuses since she didn’t sign with her real name. Petra finally reveals why she was running, but by now, he doesn’t believe her.

Rafael’s stepmother overhears her husband talking to someone about needing money and to leave despite the storm. The hurricane is getting so bad that downstairs, it causes the windows to blow open as Rafael finds Jane and urges her to stay in the hotel. All the while, Nadine and Michael are able to get into the locked room with the help of police only to find what looks like a surgical room.

Jane realizes Rafael is right and agrees to call her mom. She is also going to stay with her friends at the hotel to see if she can help. Down in the tunnel, a police officer tells Michael and Nadine the room connects to the rest of the recovery rooms the hotel has for patients and they think the Serbian they were after could be one of them.

Downstairs, Jane’s friends are discussing people possibly getting laid off and they ask Jane to talk to Rafael. At first she doesn’t want to take advantage of her relationship, but she agrees to find him later, until they tell her that he is talking to Michael further away in the room.

Jane goes up to the guys as Michael is telling Rafael about the secret tunnel and what is going on with Sin Rostro. Jane is stunned to hear all of this as Rafael continues to maintain his innocence as the narrator tells us that Michael is “enjoying this.” Rafael assures Michael he is not involved and pulls Jane away.

Petra and her mother are talking about what they will do now and Petra suggests she can find a small apartment. They look over at Ivan, their hostage, who offers if they let him go, then he will forget what happened, but her mom is not fond of this idea.

Jane is on the phone with her mother, but the cell phone reception is spotty. Alba is still unconscious and Xiomara wants her daughter there. Unfortunately, Jane loses the connection as Rogelio arrives to comfort Xiomara.

Jane goes down to see her friends, but she got distracted and forgot about the layoffs. Before she can tell them about Alba, Lina accuses her of not getting fired because she is dating Rafael. One of the other girls tells Jane she has a safety net that wouldn’t work for them and Jane says she will try to do something.

She goes upstairs to talk to Rafael and asks to see the list he made of who will be fired, even though she knows she shouldn’t see it. Jane can’t help herself and she reads it, as notes on the screen tell her she shouldn’t read this. Then she reads the name ‘Frankie,’ one of her friends.

Rogelio and Xiomara are sitting with Alba when the doctor comes to tell them that unfortunately because of hospital repatriation, they will have to have her mother deported back to Venezuela since she is there illegally. This causes Xiomara great worry.

Meanwhile, Jane tells Frankie the bad news, who is upset when Jane won’t try and do anything since it’s not in her position to convince Rafael to change his mind. Frankie is disappointed in her friend.

Jane goes to go talk to Rafael and gets into the elevator, just as Michael gets in as well. He admits he is following her and she begins asking him what is going on. While they argue, the elevator breaks down, which the narrator tells us is a “classic telenovela trope.”

Michael attempts to break the tension with a joke, but it doesn’t go over well. He tells Jane he got a hold of Nadine, who was letting maintenance know what happened. While this is going on, at the mental institution where Rafael’s sister, Luisa is, her stepmother/ex-lover comes to visit her.

Luisa has apparently been enjoying her time at the institution, especially with her roommate Betty, who listens, but hasn’t spoken a word in 12 years. When Luisa sees Rose, she is not happy she is there. Rose feels bad about what happened and that she’s not ready to admit she wants to be with Luisa. Luisa, however, is angry, and orders her to leave.

Ivan is in the room when a tree branch crashes through the window, sending in shards of broken glass. He sees this as his chance to escape and moves along in the chair to try and reach the glass.

In the elevator, Michael is talking about Rafael never knowing anything since Jane is sure he will send someone for help. She is so stressed out and ends up blurting about her grandma. Michael asks if Xiomara is with her and Jane admits she hasn’t heard from them, so he offers to call a cop on the radio.

Xiomara is panicking as Rogelio watches and tries to assure her they will do something. He leaves the room and a cop comes with the radio so Jane can talk to her mom. In order to tell Jane what is going on, Xiomara speaks in Spanish. A devastated Jane tells Michael her grandma could be deported.

Luisa is in bed ranting about Rose to her roommate, who is nodding along as she speaks. The door opens and Rose comes back in.

In the hotel room at the hotel, Petra comes in to find that Ivan has escaped and is holding a knife to her mom. Knowing his gun is nearby, Petra pretends to let him try to kill her mom so she can get the gun. Unfortunately, he escapes before she can shoot him.

Jane is holding her grandma’s rosary in her hands as she prays. Michael comments and asks if it’s the one she used before Heritage day, remembering the story she told about them working when her mom made delicious food. She is upset, telling Michael she hasn’t been around for her grandma much because of everything going on and he hugs her to console her. As he hugs her, the elevator opens and Rafael is there. Michael asks Jane to let him know how she is doing and he leaves as Jane thanks him.

Rogelio comes to tell Xiomara he called both the UN Ambassador and Gloria Estefan to see what they could do. She talks about not being the type of daughter her mom wanted and he assures her that her mom loves her. Xiomara mentions her face probably looks messed up so he gives her his own concealer.

Jane talks to Rafael about Frankie, who he says is new and is always late. She tries to ask if he can do anything, but he says the next person is Regina, who helped Jane earlier that night find her rosary and has kids. She’s conflicted.

Rose tells Luisa she couldn’t leave since the roads weren’t clear. Luisa is still mad at her and Rose apologizes, even giving her powdered donuts, which is what they apparently snack on after sex. Pretty soon, the two of them begin going at it hot and heavy…right in front of Betty.

Afterwards, Rose tells Luisa she will admit the truth about them and then asks Luisa about Allegria, which was the name she heard earlier while her husband was on the phone. Luisa says it was her grandmother’s name and that he named a Croatian home after her, which Rose was hoping to find out when she, well, arrived.

The next morning, Xiomara is praying over her mom (and a memory shows that Alba helped Xiomara make the food for Jane’s Heritage Day) and offering to live “a chaste life” and not to have relationships with another man unless she is married. As she is praying, Alba begins to wake up and hears, but doesn’t make a motion until Xiomara stops talking. Once Xiomara realizes she woke up, she goes to get a doctor to remove the tube that is down her throat. She asks her mom if she remembers what happened, but Alba only remembers the party.

The doctor tells Xiomara that there is no sign of long term damage with her mom and that the matter of her deportation is no longer an issue. She goes to hug Rogelio, but then remembers her prayer and pulls away as she thanks him, missing her mom’s pleased smile. Rogelio reveals he’s not the one who took care of the issue.

Jane tells Frankie about what happened, but Frankie is hurt and Jane watches as her friends leave. She gets a call from her mom to let her know that Alba is awake. After the call, she sees Regina, who is off to go pick up the kids.

Jane goes to see Rafael and apologizes for putting him through the issues with who was being fired. He accepts and knows she wouldn’t want to see someone else get fired. She talks about how she has changed and admits that she will try to guess babies ages when she sees them. As it turns out, he has as well and they share a kiss.

A forensic tech tells Michael that Rafael’s prints were not in the surgical room. Michael reads through the records of all the patients in the recovery rooms. As he does so, he sees people walking by with obvious facial implants. He tells Nadine that people were having their faces changed, criminals specifically. Michael also found x-rays for a patient 320 who was in the suite the day their Serbian disappeared. They ask the cop at the hospital to check his room and he isn’t there.

Petra and her mom are cleaning and Petra thinks things will be fine, but her mom is sure Milos will know where they are soon.

Jane goes to see Rafael and hears him talking about renovation plans to get the hotel cleaned up. She remembers Michael saying that Rafael always knows what is happening in the hotel. Jane asks Rafael about the passports and phones that Michael had mentioned. He tells her the truth, which is that he has those for when he has to go find Luisa. Rafael assures her nothing is going on and Michael is just trying to get into her head, and he asks her not to let him get in between their relationship. She assures him she won’t as they leave to go to the hospital.

Luisa, meanwhile, is laying in bed when she pulls out a dragonfly pin that had been on Rose’s jacket. She asks Betty about picking locks.

Rose goes to see Rafael and tells him about his father taking five million dollars and wanting to move to Croatia, which apparently has no extradition and is perfect for criminals. She admits that she thinks his father could be Sin Rostro.

Xiomara calls Michael and thanks him for what he did. She knows he helped her mom because no one else knew about the deportation troubles. A flashback shows Michael calling the hospital to say that they needed Alba for a police investigation as a witness. He asks Xiomara not to tell Jane since she might think it was to get her back. Michael admits that he still loves Jane and believes they belong together. The narrator reveals that Michael believed this for his entire life…”until he drew his last breathe.”
