Kid Rock has a new album coming out soon, so to announce that he’s still around, he did an op-ed that certainly has people talking. In it, he didn’t have a central thesis, but just listed what he does and what his feelings are.
The singer, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, wrote an op-ed for The Guardian, which was published on Saturday. He wrote to his fans that he was “hell” as a child and he’s “not as educated as some politicians.” Rock also noted that he is about to become a grandfather at age 43 and he’s excited about that.
“I’m 43 and about to become a grandfather, but it keeps my redneck street cred up. I could be a great-great-great-grandfather by the time I’m 80,” he wrote. “I am excited, but also nervous for my son. He was dropped on my doorstep at six months when I had no money and was trying to be a rock star. I didn’t have a clue.”
Rock also explained that he doesn’t “FaceTweet.” That’s not a real thing, but by saying that, he’s proven that he doesn’t care much for social media. “I turn on my computer and look at porn a little bit, see what’s going on in the news, but that’s about it. I’m comfortable with that,” he wrote of his internet use.
Also, Rock doesn’t smoke weed because “it makes me dumb.” However, he still thinks that pot, cocaine and heroin should be legalized. He can also never have enough guns.
Lastly, he wrote about the genre that he helped popularize, rap-rock. It didn’t turn out as well as he’d hoped, though.
“Rap-rock was what people wanted at the time, and they still love those songs at shows. But it turned into a lot of bulls**t and it turned out to be pretty gay,” he wrote. “If someone says you can’t say ‘gay’ like that you tell them to go f**k themselves. You’re not going to get anything politically correct out of me.”
Rock is releasing First Kiss on Feb. 24. It is his follow-up to 2012’s Rebel Soul.
