Lena Dunham has deleted her Twitter app from her phone, but has not completely quit the social networking site. The Girls creator said she has cut back significantly because of all of the negativity she gets.

While walking the red carpet of the Golden Globes on Sunday, Dunham explained she’s no longer “co-dependent” with Twitter.

"I deleted Twitter because I'm trying to create a safer space for myself emotionally," she told Ryan Seacrest. "People threaten my life and tell me what a cow I am.”

Elle reports she hasn’t completely thrown the towel in though, saying she’s still on it “occasionally.”

"But it's not the same co-dependence Twitter and I once shared,” she explained. “It's the dark side of the Internet. There's a lot of people I love on Twitter, but unfortunately you can't read those without reading deranged Neocons telling you you should be buried under a pile of rocks."

That same day, she did use Twitter to promote the season premiere of Girls.

“Girls Season 4 premieres tonight at 9pm on HBO. No presh. I mean, who cares, right!?” she wrote.

She also explained herself further on Monday, writing, “I deleted Twitter from my phone and sometimes send a tweet to a friend I trust to post if I'm out and about and wanna share. We gotta create systems that make us feel safe. Sorry I confused you aka who cares.”
