Nick Cannon officially filed for divorce from estranged wife, Mariah Carey, on Dec. 12. They announced their separation in August.

Cannon was the one to confirm rumors of a split this past summer, saying they were living apart for a few months at that point.

TMZ reports the timing of Cannon’s filing makes sense when considering reports that a week earlier, Carey was three hours late to the pre-taping of the Rockefeller Center tree lighting performance opener.

It was said at the time she was on the phone with her lawyers and in far too heated of a discussion to get off the phone and make the taping.

They were likely hashing out a divorce settlement and did so before Cannon filed the paperwork about a week later.

On Thursday, Carey announced a Las Vegas residency deal with Caesars Palace, where she will be performing all 18 of her No. 1 hits.

Cannon and Carey share 3-year-old twins; Monroe and Moroccan. They got married in 2008.
