Los Angeles may have moved one step closer to finally having an NFL franchise again. Sam Kroenke, the owner of the St. Louis Rams, will build an NFL stadium in Inglewood, California, near The Forum.
Kroenke bought the 60-acre site near the famous venue in January 2014 and will work with Stockbridge Capital Group, which owns the 238-acre Hollywood Park, to build the new stadium. The group confirmed the news with the Los Angeles Times.
The Rams franchise has not been happy with the current state of the Edward Jones Dome, which is outdated by 2015 standards. They could change its lease to year-to-year, since the franchise never made plans for improvements to the St. Louis stadium. However, city officials do plan on making a proposal to keep the team there by the end of January.
NFL fans living in Los Angeles have been without a franchise for two decades now. The Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders moved to Oakland in 1994.
However, there have been recent developments to give fans hope. Back in October, it was reported that the San Diego Chargers were also considering a move to LA, as are the Raiders. The earliest any franchise could move there is 2016 and could play in the Rose Bowl or Coliseum temporarily.
The developers for Kroenke’s stadium said that no tax dollars would be used for the project.
