Selena Gomez has caused some controversy by exposing her ankle in a group shot of friends including Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Cody Simpson in a mosque in Dubai.
Before New Year’s, the group visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where they were mostly all covered up from head to toe. However, in the two photos Gomez posted – one of which has been taken down – she exposes too much skin.
As Billboard notes, it’s a sign of disrespect not to be fully covered in a mosque. The group is also seen smiling and laughing in their group shot, which is also seen as disrespectful.
The photo she deleted showed both her ankle and part of her bare right leg.
Gomez hasn’t responded to critics, but one of the comments left on the photo features a fan urging her to “respect others and their beliefs!" Another wrote about their lighthearted group shot, “If their intent was to learn about Islam they wouldn't be posing like they were standing outside and amusement park.”
The Daily Mail notes Gomez is hardly the first celebrity to cause controversy at the Grand Mosque, Rihanna was scolded for doing a photoshoot in front of it and asked to leave.
