With origins in Park City, Utah, last year, Sundance Institute has continued the newly formed tradition of holding a film festival over the course of 10 days. Starting on Jan. 22, with a press conference involving Robert Redford, president and founder, Keri Putnam, and John Cooper, Sundance worked with the SnapChat app in order to let the public experience the festival, without actually being present at the location.
Their online presence, made possibly by their social media team provides behind the scenes coverage and exclusive footage of Sundance stars some of which include writer/director brothers Mark and Jay Duplass. SundanceFest is the SnapChat username to follow for this exclusive access, provided by Sundance Institute .
It’s ironic revealing the film festival though the outlet of SnapChat in the sense that the organization promotes independent film. In a way, Sundance is creating mini indie films using the same actors in this social media platform.
The festival will end on Jan. 31 with the Cinema Café conversations with Bryan Buckley and Charles Stone III, along with a closing night awards ceremony hosted by Tig Notaro.
Sundance will continue its usage with SnapChat throughout the remaining festivities.
