Our midseason return episode opens inside of one of Crowley’s nightmares. He is being attacked by a group of demons, but right as he dies in the dream he awakes to his mother’s voice. Of course the interaction between the two is nowhere near a normal mother/son relationship with their conversation. Rowena asks what she can do for her son, where he responds “Not a thing you evil bitch." Even better is her response, "not a thing you evil bitch, mother."
But now we are back to the real stars of the show, the Winchesters. Dean finally admits to Sam and Cas about his murder of Randy and the others from our midseason finale. Dean knows that the Mark is affecting his hunting more than he’d like to admit. Unfortunately there’s no lore available on the topic so Cas goes to bring Metatron back to the bunker, hoping for some answers.
So once they’ve got Metatron all settled in in the boys’ interrogation room, Sam lets Metatron know that Dean is alive and no longer a demon, however they need him to tell them how to remove the Mark. Metatron isn’t too happy to help the Winchesters, but he does give them one little piece of advice for free. He tells them they’re going to have to get the First Blade back from Crowley.
So the boys go back to visit Crowley who agrees to meet with them if only to get some time away from that snooping woman of a mother. He’s not too keen on bringing the Blade back out, but he eventually agrees and tells the boys he hid it in his crypt. Of course mother dearest was listening in the whole time and has one of the demons steal it for her. But then she kills the demon in an effort to get her son to trust her.
So the boys go back to talk to their angel in the bunker, but when Cas and Sam aren’t paying attention, Dean confronts Metatron alone. The Winchesters already got their first tidbit of information for free, so any remaining information Metatron knows will cost them something. Of course, Dean doesn’t have the patience for that, even if he wasn’t sporting the Mark of Cain. So what does our former demon resort too? That’s right, torture.
Cas and Sam finally get down to where Dean is torturing Metatron just in time to separate the two before Metatron is murdered. However, because of Dean’s outburst, Metatron has sworn to never help the boys again. The only information they were able to get out of him was "The river ends at the source." But what exactly is the original source of the Mark?
So Cas returns Metatron back to his jail cell while Sam has an idea. Cain had the Mark fro years, so he had to have some control over it right? So that must mean Dean has some control over it as well right?
And we do see some control on Dean’s end when he goes to meet up with Claire, something Cas had asked from him since Dean is the one she’s mad at. Claire has met up with two other wanderers who agreed to take care of Dean for her as revenge for what he did to Randy. However when the two come at him with an ax and a bat, Dean easily disarms both of them, but he stops himself from killing them and instead destroys a bench, leaving without saying a word to Claire.
But the “meeting” with Dean worked and after Cas locates Claire, she says she’s ready to live a different life. Though she doesn’t promise to live a life with Cas, instead just promising to call.
