Considering how successful the new DC Comics shows have been for The CW, it makes perfect sense for the network to start talks for a second spin-off from Arrow. It’s possible that Brandon Routh’s Atom character could be the star of his own series.
During Sunday’s Television Critics Association press tour panel, The CW president Mark Pedowitz teased that the network was in “preliminary discussions” to start another DC Comics series. However, at first, he wouldn’t say which character would be the focus.
“You’d have to be judicious,” Pedowitz said, reports Entertainment Weekly. “Could there be another hour in that universe? Possibly. That’s why we’re in preliminary discussion. [The show] has to stand on its own legs.”
Later, EW asked Pedowitz if Atom, played by Routh, would be the star of the new series. “There’s room for a lot of things, but we’re not there,” he said. “Again, preliminary discussions.”
Greg Berlanti, whose team oversees the Arrow/Flash universe wasn’t much clearer himself. “We're in very early talks in a very general idea that we haven't gone deeper on yet,” he said, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
Routh, who was cast over the summer, noted that he was hesitant to take the role, since his last gig in the DC world - playing Superman in the disappointing Superman Returns - didn’t go so well.
“I never thought it would happen and that I would play, in my mind, a pivotal character. It’s been nothing but an amazing experience,” Routh said.
Both Arrow and The Flash were among the eight shows The CW renewed on Sunday.
