Covert Affairs, the cable spy drama fronted by Piper Perabo, has been cancelled by USA Network. The show had a good run, lasting five seasons.
This is actually a surprising move, since the show was still getting decent ratings for the network when DVR numbers are considered. As Deadline notes, the show averaged 3.3 million total viewers in Live+7 numbers. However, when you only consider live viewing, the show was last among USA’s ramas, with only 445,000 viewers in the 18-49 demographic. That’s worse than even Rush, which had 509,000 viewers in the demo and was cancelled.
Covert Affairs’ rising production costs may have also been a factor. The network may have also decided to just completely move on from the older series, since White Collar also came to a close. However, Royal Pains did get picked up, as did Graceland.
USA also has a slew of new shows on the way, including Mr. Robot with Christian Slater and Colony with Josh Holloway. Dig will also start this year.
Covert Affairs did end with several loose ends, but it is highly unlikely to continue on anywhere else.
Perabo confirmed the sad news herself, thanking fans on Twitter for their support.
