The Director’s Guild of America announced its nominations for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2014 and kept hopes alive for Wes Anderson, Alejandro G. Inarritu and Richard Linklater. The other two slots were filled by some surprising picks.
The field includes Anderson, who directed The Grand Budapest Hotel; Linklater for Boyhood; Inarritu for Birdman; American Sniper’s Clint Eastwood; and The Imitation Game’s Morten Tyldum.
This is the first time Anderson, Linklater and Tyldum have been nominated for a DGA Award. Inarritu has two previous DGA nominations, with one for Babel in 2006 and another for his “Best Job” Proctor and Gamble commercial in 2012.
Of course, Eastwood has a few DGA nominations under his belt. He won for Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven, later winning the Best Director Oscars for both. He was also nominated for Mystic River and won the DGA’s lifetime achievement award in 2006.
Today’s nominations were a major blow to Unbroken’s Angelina Jolie and Selma’s Ava DuVernay. While there are occasional differences between the DGA nominations and Oscars, they are rare. For example, at last year’s Oscars, Captain Phillip’s Paul Greengrass was the only DGA nominee not to get an Oscar nomination. Still, both the DGA and Oscars went with Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron.
The 2012 awards was a strange one though, as Ben Affleck won the DGA for Argo, but wasn’t even nominated at the Oscars.
The 67th Annual DGA Awards Dinner is on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
