Bruce Jenner’s 88-year-old mother, Esther Jenner, has broken her silence on her son’s long rumored sex change, which she has confirmed in an interview.
Esther is the first to confirm reports about the former Olympian’s transition to become a woman, though it’s been reported he will sit down with Diane Sawyer to publicly describe his journey. Many sources close to Jenner have confirmed, so his opening up about it now would just be a formality.
Esther told The AP although “it was brief,” she did talk to him about his transition.
“I said I was proud of him and that I'll always love him,” she said. “I never thought I could be more proud of Bruce when he reached his goal in 1976, but I'm more proud of him now. It takes a lot of courage to do what he's doing."
She went on to say her Keeping Up with the Kardashians star son reassured her he’s still the “same person” he’s always been.
“He said, 'Mom, I'm still the same person,'” she explained. “He said, 'I'm still going to race cars, I'm still going to fly airplanes and I'm going to get my helicopter license.'
He started the conversation by telling her, “I want to be honest about my identity and I know this is coming out in the press,” She added, “He started by saying, 'We need to have a long, serious talk.’”
Even though Esther admitted it was a “shock” at first, she said she is “at peace with what he is and what he’s doing.”
Bruce’s rep would not comment on his mother’s interview.
