Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has a torn left meniscus and will have to undergo surgery.

ESPN noted that the team announced the injury Thursday and said that he tore the medial meniscus during his off-season workout program.

The prognosis was revealed on Wednesday after he got an MRI. He is scheduled to undergo surgery with Dr. James Andrews next week.

So when pitchers and catchers report in a few weeks, Martinez will be recovering from surgery.

In 2012, the 36-year-old torn his ACL in the same knee and had to sit out the entire season.

Martinez spent most of his career with the Cleveland Indians and then two years with the Boston Red Sox, before signing with the Tigers. He signed a four-year, $68 million deal with the club in the offseason.

Martinez has had great numbers over his 12-year career. He is .306 hitter, with a slugging percentage of .475 and has a total of 189 HRs and 927 RBIs, Baseball-Reference.com noted.
