Emma Thompson says she used to cheer up a melancholy Prince Charles when he was going through his high-profile divorce from Princess Diana in 1996.

In the unauthorized book Charles: Heart of a King, Thompson tells the book's author, Time's Catherine Mayer she used to write him letters about her shenanigans at the theater company she was working for.

“I would get periodical messages from the boys that look after him at Highgrove saying: '[Could you] drop him a note because he's a bit low in the water,' so I'd pick up my pen and write as funny a letter as I could think of," Thompson said, The Times excerpted from the book.

The book covers many aspects of his life, including quarrels with his parents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who are his “harshest critics.”

But the Prince of Wales’ palace told People since the book is “not authorized in any way,” they are “reserving judgment until we have read the whole thing.”
