Disney XD is bringing Guardians of the Galaxy to its collection of animated shows this year, and the series has just found its Star Lord.
Boy Meets World star Will Friedle has been cast as Peter Quill (Star Lord) in Guardians of the Galaxy. Disney made the announcement via their Disney XD PR Channel on YouTube.
Friedle is known mainly for his role on Boy Meets World as Eric Matthews, but he has also had a good amount of experience with animation. He voiced Batman on Batman Beyond as well as Ron on Kim Possible and Deadpool on Ultimate Spider-Man. He will be playing the character Chris Pratt played in the live action Marvel movie.
Speaking of which, it should be noted that this animated series will have absolutely no connection to the 2014 film. There was some confusion last year when Marvel’s vice president for animation told The New York Times that the show would pick up where the movie left off. Director of the movie James Gunn later told Slashfilm that the show is totally unrelated from his film and from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What this probably means then is that the show will pick up at generally the same point the movie left off on, with the Guardians all being assembled together and ready to go on new adventures, but it won't actually be related to the plot of the movie.
Even if they aren't actually connected though, Disney is clearly capitalizing on the success of the 2014 movie with this show, and early footage shown at Comic-Con last year seemed to be pretty reminiscent of the movie. While the original comics are for a bit older audiences, the series seemed to be aimed mainly at a younger demographic.
Also starring with Friedle in the show will be Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon and Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot. No release date has been confirmed, but the show is expected to air on Disney XD sometime this year.
