On the two-hour season finale of How to Get Away with Murder, growing suspicion re-opens Rebecca's case, Nate is released on bail, and viewers finally learned who killed Lila through a series of flashbacks.
Wes returns to his apartment after visiting Rudy and recalls a conversation he shared with Laurel, worrying that Rebecca is tied to Lila's murder somehow after all. When Wes considers asking Rebecca if she lied to him before, Laurel thinks it's a bad idea, because Rebecca is the only one who didn't help dispose of Sam's body and can use what she knows against them. In the present day, when Wes is reunited with Rebecca following his meeting with Rudy, both of them appear distrusting of the other and Rebecca wonders if "something is wrong." Wes, however, reassures her that everything is fine and that he loves her. Afterwards, the two engage in a steamy make out session.
Flashback to five months earlier when Rudy hears Lila and Rebecca fighting from inside his apartment. Lila is upset, because she doesn't want to sell drugs anymore and plans to get back together with Griffin. Rebecca thinks it's a bad idea since Griffin is controlling. Lila claims that she loves Griffin and attributes all her problems to Rebecca; she never acted crazy before meeting her. The two wind up getting into an argument when Lila says she was raised better than to be a "trashed-out druggie whore" and Rebecca tells her never to call her again. When Rebecca forces Lila out of her apartment, Rudy catches Rebecca crying near the stairwell and she snaps at him.
Return to the present day where Connor and Oliver are kissing and Oliver decides to kill the mood, suggesting they both get tested before becoming more intimate. While reluctant at first, Connor eventually agrees to Oliver's request.
Meanwhile, in court, Nate's request for bail is denied. When Annalise informs Frank and Bonnie that Nate is an "idiot for not firing his lawyer," they instruct her not to get involved with the case. At the same time, Annalise prepares for a trial of her own when she represents a priest accused of killing another priest. When the priest appeals to Annalise to withdraw his guilty plea, things take a different turn.
Flashback to the night of Lila's death, where Griffin and Rebecca are doing PCP at a frat house. Griffin asks Rebecca if Lila knows she's with him and when Rebecca says she doesn't, he starts to complain about Lila being too "needy" for his liking all of a sudden. Soon enough, Rebecca changes the subject, saying she never's been inside a frat house until now and asks Griffin for a tour. Upstairs, Rebecca texts Lila from Griffin's phone, pretending to be him and when Griffin returns, they kiss. He's worried Lila will find out, but Rebecca convinces him their secret is safe.
In the present day, Wes is still obsessing over Rebecca potentially lying to him, much to Laurel's dismay. Their conversation is cut short when Michaela interrupts, informing them that the judge finally accepted their client's "not guilty" plea and Bonnie needs them to take a "field trip." They go to the church where Father Andrew allegedly murdered Father Bernard and speak to him about what happened when he saw Father Bernard's body. The scene is intercut with Annalise lecturing her students about the "not guilty" defense in class. Simultaneously, new accusations arise when Annalise and her students question additional witnesses and one of them suggests that Father Andrew molested a boy who killed himself. When Annalise questions Father Andrew about this, he tells her that Father Bernard was really the one who abused the boy and that's why he killed him. Further challenges arise when Annalise tells her students Father Andrew feels that he cannot tell the court about Father Bernard's admission that he molested the young boy while in Confession, so pleading manslaughter isn't an option.
Meanwhile, Michaela notices weird behavior from Laurel and Wes, who are still at odds with Wes' growing suspicion of Rebecca.
In the past, Lila walks in on Griffin and Rebecca having sex and realizes that Rebecca put him up to it. Lila, Griffin, and Rebecca get into a physical altercation, but soon, the fight breaks up, and Lila leaves in tears, saying she never wants to see either of them again.
In the present, Wes and Laurel re-examine the details surrounding Rebecca's case and Annalise tries to convince Father Andrew to share Father Bernard's revelation to him during Confession in court. Later, Frank catches Bonnie and Asher flirting at the Keating house when Annalise requests a private audience with him in her office. She wants to know if he still has a connection to a local jail. Frank knows she's asking because it involves Nate. Meanwhile, in jail, Nate is abruptly awoken from his sleep and beaten. At the same time, Connor and Oliver go to the clinic to get their HIV testing. Connor has to leave for class, so he asks the nurse to call him with his results.
Back at the Keating house, Bonnie tells Annalise about Nate being beaten in jail. Annalise admits she already knows, because she and Frank arranged for it to happen. Since Nate can't be released from jail, he'll be placed in solitary confinement, which will protect him and his status as a former cop. Annalise is visibly upset, so she asks Bonnie to find Asher and bring him to her. Bonnie claims she feels bad about involving him, since there's a chance it will hurt his future, but Frank sees through her lie and realizes she's worried because she's attracted to him. When Asher appears, Frank says they need his help with Father Andrew's case. Frank asks Asher to talk to the Judge then secretly snaps pictures of him doing so.
Meanwhile, Annalise persistently follows Agnes, a woman whom she believes to be Father Andrew's lover. After a bit of prodding that alludes to Annalise's own situation involving Nate, Agnes agrees to testify on Father Andrew's behalf and puts forth an alibi claiming that she was with the priest on the night of Father Bernard's murder. When Agnes takes things a step further and says she and Father Andrew were lovers, the court is appalled and Father Andrew is upset with the approach Annalise has taken to try to win his case. The judge also issues a recess to allow additional deliberation.
During the recess, Connor nervously paces inside the court house while waiting to hear his test results, but the nurse he dealt with is done her shift and the other nurse on duty refuses to tell him anything. A few seconds later, Connor gets a call from Oliver and panics because he still hasn't gotten his results. Oliver's results came back negative and he reassures Connor that his will, too. At the same time, Laurel frets over Wes' absence and he explains that he's still investigating Rebecca's confession, this time alone. Wes is finding his girlfriend guiltier and guiltier, but Laurel thinks he's overreacting for nothing.
In a flashback, Rebecca arrives at Lila's sorority house and apologizes via phone call. Rebecca is still convinced Griffin is not who Lila thinks he is and wants Lila to call her back as soon as she can. Rebecca bumps into a basketball player and also crosses paths with two sorority girls before going into the house.
In the present, Agnes fields more questions in court about her and Father Andrew's secret "affair" and their encounter on the night of Father Bernard's murder. Still uncomfortable with Agnes testifying, Father Andrew wishes to change his plea back to guilty, and Annalise attempts to silence him by having the judge declare an "immediate mistrial." Opposing counsel weighs in and she and Annalise go trade arguments with the judge, though Father Andrew sticks to his plea and is arrested. Agnes continues to try and fight for Father Andrew's release and says she loves him, but he instructs her to give up, because he doesn't feel the same. Agnes is visibly heartbroken.
Meanwhile, Connor is relieved when he learns his results are also negative and shares the good news with Asher, who seems happy for him. Before the conversation get much further, Michaela calls Connor over and they hear Laurel trying to advise Wes to stop digging into Rebecca's case. Soon, the others intrude and also ask questions, causing Laurel to now try and shut down their curiosity as well, but with no avail. When Wes continues to reveal his findings from he and Laurel's searches, Michaela demands to know where Rebecca is.
Back at the Keating house, Frank informs Annalise and Bonnie that a new judge was assigned to Nate's case and he's since been granted bail. Following Nate's release, Annalise goes to visit him, saying she needs his help, but Nate doesn't want to hear it. Meanwhile, Rebecca is ambushed by Wes, Michaela, Laurel, and Connor at Wes' apartment. Wes watches as the others interrogate Rebecca and ask if she manipulated them into believing that she didn't kill Lila. Rebecca tries to appeal to Wes for help, but Michaela jumps in and says that Rebecca ruined all of their lives, so they deserve to know if she's really lying to them or not. Rebecca tells them that she called campus security on them and that's why the cops showed up to the Keating house when they all returned to dispose of Sam's body.
Meanwhile, Asher figures out how Frank used him to get Nate out on bail and questions Bonnie about it. Frank walks in and Asher tries to act professional, but Bonnie admits that he accidentally found out. Frank promises not to tell Annalise about their relationship, but backpedals a second later, saying he needs to think on what he's going to do.
Back at Wes' apartment, Annalise arrives in a tizzy and wonders what her students have been keeping from her. When she enters, her students have Rebecca tied up in the bathroom and are all shouting that Rebecca duped them into proving her not guilty. Annalise soon silences them all and asks Wes for clarification. Wes says his classmates are telling the truth and Sam might've been innocent. She's got a new task ahead of her - figuring out if Rebecca is guilty (again).
In flashback to the night Lila died, she and Sam argue on the phone while he's away in New Haven and she threatens to tell Annalise about their affair. In the present, Annalise and her students continue to question Rebecca. They have a mock "trial" in the Keating house. Eventually, Rebecca confesses to going up to the water tank where Lila was found, but she didn't kill her; she just discovered Lila's body. She also gave her neighbor, Rudy PCP and Purple X to keep him quiet, because she thought he'd incriminate her. Wes believes Rebecca's story, but the others aren't so sure she's telling the truth. However, flashbacks from the night of Lila's death reveal that Rebecca did only find her body and that Sam hired Frank to kill Lila. Rebecca disappears when nobody believes her, but later viewers find out that Frank killed her, too.
