Forward Jaromir Jagr was acquired by the Florida Panthers on Thursday in a trade with the New Jersey Devils.
According to the Associated Press, the Devils will get a second-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-round pick in 2016. The third round pick will come from either the Panthers or the Minnesota Wild. In addition, Florida will pay the prorated remainder of Jagr’s $3.5 million salary, however the Devils are responsible for his $2 million games-played bonus, ESPN reports.
"Timing is something that sometimes that you don't and can't control. [The trade] had nothing to do with us winning or losing last night," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said, NHL.com notes. "[It] gave us an opportunity to acquire two picks that we feel can help us in the future. ... By no means are we feeling that we're out of the race. When transactions like this take place, it gives opportunities for people to come forward."
Lamoriello went on to add, "Jaromir never came to me, we never had a discussion about a trade, never had a discussion about where, when, how, why. [That's] not something we feel is the way you should operate with players as far as you have to think about what's best for the organization; players understand that. ... I think Jaromir understands that."
Jagr, a native of the Czech Republic and a 21-year NHL veteran, is in his second season with the Devils. In addition to the Devils he has played for the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Washington Capitals. He has won the Hart Memorial Trophy, five Art Ross Trophies, and has been selected seven times to the NHL’s First All-Star Team, and has won two Stanley Cups. Jagr has 11 goals and 29 points in 57 games this season, according to Fox Sports. He is first in points (1,784), games played (1,530), assists (1,068), goals (716), plus/minus (plus-284), and power-play goals (202) among active players. He ranks first in game-winning goals, fifth in points, sixth in goals, seventh in assists, and 13th in games played in NHL history.
The Devils are eight points behind the Bruins in the Eastern Conference while the Panthers are two points behind the Bruins.
